Hunterston Weather Envelope

British Nuclear Group is decommissioning Hunterston, a nuclear power station. The decommissioning strategy adopted by them includes transforming the reactor buildings into ‘safestores’ to allow the residual radioactivity to decay to a low level. The life of the transformed building is to be 100 years.
In Phase 1 of the Weather Envelope Project British Nuclear Group commissioned a consulting engineer to provide an exemplar design for a new weather envelope to replace the deteriorating façade of patent glazing and to provide a new roof.
Cadogans was appointed as Design Checker of that exemplar design.
The exemplar design included the following:
- Structural check of existing building
- Design of new weather envelope
- Wind tunnel testing
- Internal environment and passive ventilation studies
Cadogans main duties were as follows:
- Review of methodologies prepared by the Designer
- Independent structural analysis Independent design review
- Independent assessment of wind speeds and force
- Review of all calculations, drawings and documents submitted by the Designer
- Preparation of Final Report
