The matter hinged on whether various provisions of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 had been breached. In this case the manual handling involved pushing and pulling rather than lifting. However, the regulations and associated guidance cover this type of manual handling and give suggested limits to the load to be pushed/pulled. The space available was confined and the floor sloped.

This project, involving the complete restoration of the 1923 Scherzer style Inchinnan Bascule Bridge over the White Cart Water in Renfrew, was completed in August 2004 at a cost in excess of £1 million. This major civil engineering project by Renfrewshire Council has saved this important road link from imminent closure, allowed removal of a long standing weight restriction and, by re-establishing the opening facility, has secured the use of the river for freight and pleasure craft.

A mating pair of sliding doors was provided for an industrial radiography chamber. Tight construction tolerances were required to keep radiation leakage within safe levels. At the same time, being in a busy industrial environment, heavy usage of the doors was expected.

Workers used a lift shortly after cleaners had carried out daily cleaning work. The lift had been mopped, however, cleaning was not followed up by a dry mop to dry the lift floor. In addition, the cleaners did not put out any cautionary signs to suggest that the lift floor might be wet. On entering the lift, one of the workers slipped and sustained injuries.

A young customer was able to gain access to the underside of a checkout conveyor. The conveyor should have stopped but it did not. The child's arm was trapped in the conveyor mechanism. Fortunately the child escaped with only minor injuries.
